The Upstairs Machine Room

Moving ICL 1900 mainframe equipment

The first major procurement following the original 1905E was a 1903T and to make room for this on the ground floor the upstairs seminar room was converted to a machine room for the light weight periperals. Just how light weight can be judged from this picture of what looks like a Line Printer being hoisted upstairs. Alan Coombe (left) and Laurie Benfield (right - well who could mistake that trademark black leather waistcoat ) look on as a couple of Operators ( Trevor Woods on the left ? ) help position the beast. I believe job descriptions did mention the need for heavy lifting at times ! The guy in the suit with his back to the camera is almost certainly an ICL engineer - too worried to look!
