New Communications equipment

This picture shows the Director ( Peter Stocker ) with the Machine Manager ( John Roper ) and Data Supervisor ( Marilyn Ward ) at the console of the Micro16P front end processor. The Micro16 was used for controlling interactive terminal access to the mainframe ICL 1905E. Note the 16 bit switches on the front panel used for manually entering bootstrap codes etc. Mini computers ( an odd description now when you look at the size ) were just starting to appear in schools of study and CHE for example had a Varian 620/i in 1970 which was interfaced to an NMR spectrometer for data collection. Paper tape was the only method of transferring data to the mainframe for subsequent analysis.
