ICL distributed the partial source of the GEORGE operating system ( about 1500 1K chapters ) and some Universities including UEA were brave enough to make local modifications. A joint ICL & Universities project team (UIJPC) was established at Oxford to collect & distribute these modifications ( in much the same way that the Open Source movement operates today for Unix ). Early mods. at UEA were tentative ( e.g. extra page throws for the line printer on pressing the form feed button - two whole "PERI" instructions ! ). Keith Woods later made some enhancements to the paging algorithm for GEORGE4 ( dangerous stuff this ) and Kevin Worvill wrote Listfile debatchers for remote line printers which proved to be a popular UIJPC item. The document scanned in here ( no word processors then of course) is the system description of a built in accounting system involving extensive kernel changes and a whole new chapter ( GEORGE speak for overlay or code section ).
