User Documentation and Programming Notes

The Computing Centre produced a range of programming notes (PNs) for users describing the basic operating system commands and language used to get jobs to run (mostly FORTRAN) . When the service first started the Computer Science people shared the Computing Centre building with service staff and contributed to this documentation. Programming Note 1 (PN1) was written by lecturer Wendy Milne for budding FORTRAN programmers. PNs continued in production throughout the life of GEORGE2/GEORGE3 and the VAX services with PN200 in 1983 for example being "The CPC VAX 11/780 Service at UEA" written by Paddy Anstey (Senior Programming Advisor following on from Ortwin Treutler and now of UEA staff education (CSED) fame )

As well as user notes the Centre produced other systems documentation according to the original scheme of five categories defined by John Roper in 1969 as:

General Memorandum (GM) and GM1 on documentation types was the self defining template for GMs !

User Notes (UN) - issued to all users on system facilities etc.

Operator Notes (ON) - specialised Operator notes for the mainframe & system software

Programming Notes (PN) - on the various programming languages supported & running jobs

Programming Specifications (PS) - complete program documentation for UEA developed system software
